The Strategic Learning Architect: Driving Performance in the Age of AI with Debbie Richards (Thursday, April 30, 2026)

The Strategic Learning Architect: Driving Performance in the Age of AI

The ground is shifting for talent development. For decades, our value was often measured by the volume of content we could create. Today, AI can generate outlines, scripts, and assessments in seconds. This transition is not about replacement; it is the partner we need to finally move from being order-takers for training requests to becoming strategic leaders who drive measurable business results.

In this two-hour interactive workshop, we will explore how to evolve from a content creator into a Strategic Learning Architect. You will learn to use your professional judgment as the ultimate filter, ensuring AI acts as an accelerator for quality rather than just a generator of generic content. By narrowing our focus to high-impact activities, we will practice moving away from tactical production toward solving real business problems.

Key Takeaways:

The Three Pillars of Modern TD: Learn to reorganize your work around Enablement, Curation, and Governance to move from pushing content to facilitating high-value learning experiences.

Strategic Problem Diagnosis: Practice shifting conversations with leaders from training requests to identifying "strategic anchors"—tying every initiative to a top-level company priority.

The Human-AI-Human Framework: Master a non-negotiable process where human expertise provides the strategic direction and the final quality pass to ensure nuance and accuracy.

Strategic Thinking in Prompting: Engage in hands-on activities to use prompting as a tool for organizational diagnosis and skills gap analysis rather than just generating text.

Presenter Bio

Debbie Richards is an AI strategy consultant and the president of Creative Interactive Ideas. As a long-standing leader within the Association for Talent Development (ATD) community, she has served as the president emeritus for the ATD Houston chapter. She frequently leverages her deep expertise to support ATD chapters and members globally as an ATD facilitator, where she leads specialized workshops on applying AI in Learning & Development.

Debbie is the author of the TD at Work issue, "Become a Strategic Learning Architect With AI," and her work focuses on helping TD professionals move beyond tactical content creation to become strategic business partners. She is a regular speaker at international conferences, championing AI literacy and the "human-AI-human" framework to ensure technology acts as a powerful accelerator for performance and business results.

The next 3 months will be focusing on AI in L & D.

The ATD-Cascadia Learning Leaders Special Interest Group (SIG) is an informal discussion group where Talent Development leaders can talk about their challenges, successes, and what they are learning along the way. Our desire is to build a community of learning leaders who share best practices and feel supported in their work.

Please note: To continue offering high-quality programming and to ensure the sustainability of our chapter, we are now implementing a $10 fee for non-members to attend networking events including our Special Interest Group events.

Please join us during the first Tuesday of every month at Noon for an hour of sharing insights and support with your colleagues.

By attending the Learning Leaders SIG, you will have an opportunity to:

Connect with other learning leaders to share current issues

Gain actionable insights on delivering a talent development strategy

Receive valuable advice and support from your peers

Fundamentals of Instructional Design

Our exclusive Fundamentals of Instructional Design (FOID) certificate program is designed to help you master the essentials and apply them with confidence. This comprehensive five-module journey focuses on the core principles that make up effective instructional design.

In today’s dynamic work environment, research consistently shows that well designed training can significantly boost knowledge retention by up to 60% and increase productivity by over 20%.

In this program, you will:

Build a clear, working understanding of the full instructional design process from needs analysis through evaluation

Apply structured approaches to determine whether or not training will address the business need

Use proven methods to analyze performance gaps

Craft clear, measurable learning objectives that guide design and define expected outcomes

Make thoughtful choices about training format, activities, and delivery

Develop a course plan that sequences key activities, integrates learning assets, and incorporates evaluation to measure transfer and business impact

Learn how to work effectively with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and Stakeholders during the instructional design process

Collaborate with a vibrant community of industry peers to expand your professional network

Whether you’re new to instructional design or looking to refine your approach, The FOID program will elevate your practice by strengthening the core skills that drive impactful learning.

Secure your spot in our May cohort and get ready to develop the training your employees and leaders need!

State of the Industry Report: Benchmarks and Confronting a BANI Environment (Friday, June 12, 2026)

In a Brittle, Anxious, Nonlinear, Incomprehensible (BANI) world, talent development has a strategic opening: harness AI agents for hyper-personalized, just in time, upskilling, co-create learning paths that adapt in real-time, and continue to lead the way in steering and driving change that leverages our unique talents in ways that ultimately best serve our target audiences.

Join us for an in-person overview of ATD National’s latest State of the Industry report, spotlighting spending trends, learning hours per employee, delivery modalities, AI adoption rates, and TD staffing shifts. We’ll confront how these conditions demand agile L&D strategies that build resilience amid uncertainty.

Expect a high-level summary with facilitated discussions where local leaders share how BANI dynamics such as fragile systems, heightened anxiety, nonlinear timelines, and opaque futures, play out in their workplaces.

This session will include an in-depth overview of the latest data, small-group BANI analysis, full-group synthesis, and personal action commitments.

Primary Audience

Talent development, L&D, and HR professionals

People leaders who sponsor or champion learning

Internal consultants, OD practitioners, and instructional designers

Learning Objectives

By session end, participants will be able to:

Summarize ATD benchmarks (spend per employee, hours, modalities, tech/AI use).

Identify two to three BANI-specific challenges from national data and local stories.

Adapt national trends to local contexts by analyzing how peers are reducing learner anxiety and handling nonlinear skill shifts.

Develop one to two concrete next steps such as AI-enabled just-in-time learning, manager enablement for uncertainty, or redesigned measurement for volatile environments.

Commit to one BANI-aware practice shift (e.g., scenario planning over linear roadmaps, anxiety-reducing communications, simplified success metrics) for immediate implementation.

This lean session will better equip you to lead through BANI with data and collective wisdom. Bring your front line stories and we’ll turn them into strategies.
